Personal Account

Sgt Raymond Percy GowardSergeant Raymond Percy Goward was Flight Engineer on Stirling bomber BK-714, part of 218 Squadron during WWII. His plane took off from RAF Downham Market for a bombing mission very late on the evening of the 21st of June 1943.

His plane was shot down over Aarschot, Belgium in the early hours of the 22nd by German ace pilot Lt. Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer.

It was Schnaufer's 13th kill out of a total of 121.

Raymond was just 19 years old. He is buried alongside his seven fellow crew members in a well-tended cemetery at Langdorp churchyard in Belgium.

Raymond lived in Garden Road, Sheringham along with his parents, brothers John and Stanley and his sister Mildred Goward (who lived in Sheringham and passed away on 10th October 2016).

Raymond's father, Percy Laskey Goward, was a detective sergeant in the police force.

Raymond's name is inscribed on the memorial located on the roundabout in Sheringham and his name is also in the Book of Remembrance in St Peter's Church.
